United Football League club Global FC is slated to face the Turkmenistan national team in a friendly match at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium (RMFS) on Monday.
“We were asked if we could play Turkmenistan as part of there World Cup preparation. It was an official request,” stated head coach Leigh Manson in an interview with The Manila Times.
Manson added that the game would be beneficial to further improve their club’s gameplay ahead of the resumption of matches in their mother league.
Turkmenistan, ranked 159 in the world, will have a short training camp in the country before they start their campaign for the World Cup qualifiers.
The reigning UFL champions have a depleted line-up after 11 of their players were called to join the national team competing in the under-23 meet.
Only six Filipino players, namely Ray Jonsson, Jerry Barbaso, Marco Casambre, Jason De Jong, Matthew Hartmann and Mark Winhoffer, will be available to play for the local club.
Global FC, one of the country’s top clubs with international experience having played in the AFC Cup and RHB Singapore Cup, will have to field mostly foreign players during the friendly match, according to Manson.
The game begins at 4 p.m. and admission is free.
