Global FC battles top tier newcomers JP Voltes FC in the quarterfinals of the United Football League (UFL) Cup 2016 at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium today.
The game is at 5:15 p.m.
After a tough competition in their respective groups, the two clubs emerged in the top eight clubs, which qualified for the knockout stage of the tournament.
Global ended the games in Group B at second place with four wins and a loss while JP Voltes capped off the elimination phase in Group A with a card of three wins and two losses.
Perennial title contender Global FC is expected to aggressively start its match against the former second division club as it vies to clinch a spot in the semifinals.
Efficient scorer Arthur Kouassi from Ivory Coast and midfielder Matthew Hartmann will be headlining the star-studded roster of the two-time UFL champions.
The Global FC offense will be boosted by the skills of their Azkals standouts Misagh Bahadoran, Dennis Villanueva, OJ Clarino and Fil-Iranian central midfielder Omid Nazari.
Similarly, the defense of the squad is laden with present and current national team players as Amani Aguinaldo, Jerry Barbaso and goalkeeper Patrick Deyto.
During the preliminary round of the competition, Global FC blazed through their opposition but was inflicted with a blow to their campaign as their victory against Green Archers United FC was cancelled out due to their violation of the foreigner limit.
Meanwhile, the pesky JP Voltes FC side will be led by ex-Global FC veterans Yu Hoshide and Masaki Yanagawa in the plight to overcome the powerhouse club.
Also, their strong defense is primed to be their weapon against their foes as the duo of PJ Fadrigalan and Alexandro Elnar will be manning their back-line.
Japanese reinforcements Takashi Odawara, Shimpei Wada and Yuki Nakazono will be bolstering their chances of escaping through the next round of the tilt.
JP Voltes FC came out of Group A at the third spot of the rankings with wins against second division rivals Laos FC, Forza FC, Agila MSA FC while being defeated by Stallion FC and Kaya FC for a 3-2 win-loss card.
Besides the meeting of Global FC and JP Voltes FC, defending league champ Ceres La Salle FC and Forza FC will be clashing in the quarterfinals of the UFL Cup at 8:15 p.m.
Ceres, which topped Group B, returns to the UFL stage after locking horns against Singapore’s Tampines Rovers FC, 1-1, in their most recent Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Cup outing at the Jalan Besar Stadium.
Additionally, in a recent announcement by the management, the finals of the UFL Cup, which was originally scheduled on April 9 will now be moved to April 16 to give way the AFC Cup games of Kaya FC and Ceres FC on April 12.
