Global FC suffered a 3-1 loss against Tampines Rovers FC in the first leg of the quarterfinals of the 2016 RHB Singapore Cup on Wednesday at the Jurong West Stadium in Singapore.
Tampines was aggressive early in the game with Billy Mehmet scoring the first goal off a setting by winger Hafiz Suhad in the 15th minute.
After several exchanges, Global equalized the score to 1-1 courtesy of Azkal star Misagh Bahadoran off an assist going into the halftime break.
The Rovers attacked in the second half led by Fazrul Nawaz, who managed to retake the advantage for the Mighty Stags in the 61st minute as he scored uncontested by Global.
Tampines continued pounding on the defense of Global which goalkeeper Patrick Deyto initially foiled.
However, the Singaporeans gained success as Hafiz extended the lead to two goals in the 69th minute off a pass from Irwan Shah.
Global went on the attack in the final minutes of the game but failed to seal another goal until the end of regulation.
Global FC and Tampines Rovers FC are scheduled to meet in the second leg of the quarterfinals on Saturday at 8 p.m. at the Jalan Besar Stadium also in Singapore.
Meanwhile, defending United Football League champion Ceres La Salle FC was scheduled to play against Brunei DPMM FC in the other quarterfinals pairing on Thursday night.
