GlobalPort aims to stretch its winning streak to four and claim its eighth victory when it clashes against a struggling Talk ‘N Text squad on Friday in the Philippine Basketball Association Season 41 Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.
The Batang Pier, holding a 7-3 win-loss record and occupying the fourth place, will face the Tropang Texters in the opening game at 4:15 p.m. before the 7 p.m. second game between the Star Hotshots and the Blackwater Elite.
After scoring a close 118-116 win against Mahindra in overtime last Saturday, GlobalPort has already secured a twice-to-beat quarterfinals bonus.
“Winning attitude that’s the most important character of our team. We have to sustain that kind of attitude,” coach Pido Jarencio told The Manila Times during a phone interview. “Since I was a collegiate coach, I don’t have anything in mind but to win.”
“We need to keep our rebounding and defense. We are the No. 1 team in rebounding despite we’re not the tallest team in the league.”
The Batang Pier will rely on Terrence Romeo, Stanley Pringle, Joseph Yeo, Anthony Jay Washington, Keith Jensen, Billy Mamaril and big man Rico Maierhofer in their fight against TNT.
“We could go down to No. 5 if we lose this game,” Jarencio added.
Romeo scored 29 points including the game-winning lay-up in their overtime win against the Enforcers.
The Texters previously lost to leading team San Miguel Beermen (9-2).
The Texters, holding a 5-4 win-loss record, are expected to rely on veteran Jayson Castro, Ryan Reyes, Kelly Williams, Dennis Miranda and Harvey Carey.
In the second game, the Star Hotshots (3-7) will try to clinch their fourth win in 11 games when they battle the Blackwater Elite (2-7). The Hotshots also need another victory to stay in contention for a quarterfinals spot.
The Hotshots are expected to rely on James Yap, Ian Sanggalang, Peter June Simon, Justin Melton, Mark Barroca to bounce back from their previous defeat against Barako Bull (5-5).
Carlo Lastimosa, Arthur Dela Cruz, veteran Mike Cortez and JP Erram, among others, will lead Blackwater’s charge against the Hotshots.
