FORMER Azkals skipper Chieffy Caligdong said on Wednesday that he is proud to help in developing grassroots level football in the Philippines via Globe’s Football Para sa Bayan.
“I want the kids to be good players inside and outside the football field. Football is life,” Caligdong told reporters during Globe Telecom’s Football Para sa Bayan press conference at Bonifacio Global City on Wednesday.
Football Para sa Bayan with the help of Caligdong will start a seven-side football tournament in Barotac, Nuevo in Iloilo on March 7 and 8. Besides Barotac Nuevo, the program will also conduct tryouts and training in Dumaguete, Iloilo, Davao, Palawan and Capiz this summer.
Also in the works are street football leagues, which will be implemented at the barangay level from July to October.
“It is really an honor to become part of this advocacy, said Caligdong who is part of Hans Smit’s coaching staff at the De La Salle University (DLSU). DLSU is among the top football teams competing in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines.
Since 2013, Football Para sa Bayan has provided opportunities to more than 5,000 young footballers from 40 communities all over the country to play against top football clubs in Metro Manila.
“We can help a lot of local athletes in this program. Not only helping them with possible means to secure good future. We are also harnessing untapped talents who can succeed us to become the next generation of footballers in the Philippines,” Caligdong said.
