Globe Telecom on Monday said it was also a victim of the SIM card swap scam and urged the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to conduct a full-blown investigation of the racket.
NBI agent Anna Lira Labao said Globe has identified one of the persons suspected to be behind the scheme. A picture of the suspect was taken from the footage of a closed-circuit television (CCTV) installed at the Globe store in SM North Edsa.
“It seems that a real syndicate is operating this SIM card swap scam. A pattern has been established,” Labao said.
Ian Caballero sought the help of the NBI last week after P48,000 from his bank account was electronically transferred to another bank.
Caballero said the bank transfer occurred after he learned from Globe that someone requested to have his SIM card changed.
NBI Cybercime Director Ronald Aguto has said the bureau is investigating hundreds of computer-related identity theft cases.
“How can the impostor get all the details of his (Caballero) identity?” Labao mused.
“I will meet with NBI Cyber-crime Director Ronald Aguto and plan on how to solve this,” she told The Manila Times.
Labao said they will also investigate if some Globe per-sonnel were in connivance with the syndicate.
