GM Gomez captures Battle of the Grandmasters crown



Grandmaster John Paul Gomez ruled the 2013 Battle of the Grandmasters Chess Championships held in Vito Cruz, Manila.

Gomez was in a two-way tie on top with GM Oliver Barbosa with 30 points each, but Gomez had a better quotient.

Gomez and Barbosa split the combined P240,000 cash prize.

In the final round, Gomez outplayed FIDE Master Roderick Nava after 31 moves of a Slav defense while Barbosa outclassed FM Jony Habla in a 41-move Bogo-Indian defense.

GM Darwin Laylo wound up third with 26.5 points for P75,000 while GM Joey Antonio Jr. placed fourth with 25.5 points (P50,000).

GM Mark Paragua was fifth, followed by International Master Joel Pimentel, GM Richard Bitoon, IM Emmanuel Senador, GM Eugene Torre, Nava, IM Richilieu Salcedo, National Master Narquinden Reyes and Habla.

In the women’s division, Woman IM (WIM) Frayna collected 34. 5 points to win the top prize of P50,000. She defeated untitled Ynna Sophia Canape in the final round after 30 moves of English Opening.

Former champion WIM Catherine Perena and Jean Karen Enriquez shared the second position with 27.0 points each.
