Grandmaster (GM) Mark Paragua topped the Phillip Taylor 2015 Georgia State Championship held at the Hotel Wyndham Atlanta Galleria in Atlanta, Georgia.
The 31-year-old Paragua collected 4.5 points on four wins and a draw to secure the top spot and the $1,500 top purse.
Paragua, a gold medalist in the Southeast Asian Games, opened his campaign with a victory over untitled player Sanjay Ghatti of US then scored another impressive rout of unrated player Michael Patrick Corallo of US in the second round.
He also defeated GM Alonso Zapata of Colombia in the third round and FIDE Master (FM) Li Ruifeng of US in the fourth round before settling for a draw with FM Daniel Gurevich of US in the final round.
Li placed second with four points followed by Zapata with 3.5 points, Gurevich and Corallo with three points, and Ghatti with 2.5 points.
Meanwhile, after finishing third in the 2015 Vugar Gashimov Memorial, GM Wesley So will be seeing action next in tournaments in France, Germany and the Netherlands.
