• GM Torre leads PH contingent in 2015 Asian Zone 3.3 Zonal Chess Championships


    Thirteen Filipino players led by Asia’s first Grandmaster (GM) Eugene Torre will be seeing action in the 2015 Asian Zone 3.3 Zonal Chess Championships beginning today in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Besides Torre, the other members of the men’s team are GMs Julio Catalino Sadorra, John Paul Gomez, Joey Antonio, Oliver Barbosa, Richard Bitoon and Darwin Laylo, International Masters (IM) Haridas Pascua, Rolando Nolte and Paulo Bersamina, and FIDE Master Mari Joseph Turqueza. Sadorra is the highest seeded player at fourth while Gomez is fifth, Antonio is eighth, Barbosa is ninth, Laylo si 10th and Torre is 16th. Woman IM Jan Jodilyn Fronda and untitled Mikee Charlene Suede are the country’s representatives in the women’s division of the tournament sanctioned by the International Chess Federation. There are seven countries participating in the nine-round event which serves as a qualifying for the prestigious World Cup slated on September 10 to October 4 in Baku, Azerbaijan.
