FORMER President and now Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo of Pampanga is seeking permission from the anti-graft court Sandiganbayan to undergo a follow-up mammography at the Makati Medical Center (MMC).
A mammogram, an X-ray examination of the breasts, is used to help in the early detection and diagnosis of breast diseases.
The last time that she underwent a digital mammogram was in August 2012, Arroyo said.
“She needs to undergo a follow-up mammogram as she has a high risk of developing breast cancer because her mother had breast cancer. Dr. Theresa Lopez, her personal physician of 15 years, has advised her to undergo a mammogram at least yearly,” her lawyer wrote in a three-page request.
In it, her camp sought the court’s permission to allow her to undergo the examination on December 18 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the MMC.
The 67-year-old lawmaker said the Veterans Memorial Medical Center (VMMC) in Quezon City, where she has been under hospital arrest since 2011 over a poll sabotage charge, does not have the equipment to perform a conclusive mammogram while the MMC offers digital mammography recommended by Dr. Lopez.
“Needless to say, President Arroyo will leave the MMC and return to the VMMC as soon as the mammogram and medical consultation are completed,” her request read.
