Jovelyn Gonzaga and Nene Bautista of RC Cola-Army A defeated Bernadeth Pons and Kyla Atienza of Far Eastern University (FEU), 19-21, 21-16, 15-13, in the opening day of Philippine Superliga Challenge Cup beach volleyball tournament on Saturday at the Sands at SM by the Bay in Mall of Asia in Pasay City.
“We just continue our strong communication all throughout the game. It is a big help for us because we manage to play well inside [the court],” said Gonzaga.
In the first set, RC Cola-Army A took the lead 8-7, by taking advantage of FEU’s errors.
But Pon’s three straight spikes allowed them to grab the lead 19-16 and eventually closing the set with a power hit.
FEU had an 11-9 advantage in the third set but the Army team bounced back and seal the win.
In the other matches, Meralco’s April Ross Hingpit and Jonafer San Pedro scored a 13-21, 21-18, 15-11; win against Vhimda Condada and Mary Grace Berte of Cignal Team Awesome.
Before beating Cignal, the Meralco players absorbed its first loss in the hands of Pons and Atienza of FEU 21-14, 21-12.
Norie Jane Diaz and Pau Soriano of Standard Insurance-Philippine Navy A overpowered RC Cola-Army B’s Genie Sabas and Jeannie delos Reyes, 21-18, 24-22.
Sabas and delos Reyes earlier trounced Angelica Dacaymat and Jasmine Alcayde of University of the East, 21-18, 21-13.
Cherry Rondina and Patty Orendain of Foton scored a resounding, 21-4, 21-7, win over Aileen Abuel and Princess Listana of Accel.
Maica Morada and Ces Molina of Petron 4T defeated Florence Madulid and Pau Genido of Standard Insurance-Philippine Navy B 21-17, 21-14.
The next elimination round will be on May 17, Sunday while the knockout quarterfinals, semifinals and finals was scheduled May 22 and 29.
