Ruben Gonzales and Francis Casey Alcantara will start the country’s campaign against Taiwan in the Asia-Oceania Davis Cup Group 2 tie at the Philippine Columbian Association shell-clay courts in Paco, Manila.
Gonzales will take on Taiwanese Ti Chen in the opening singles match at 3 p.m. followed by second singles between Alcantara and Liang-Chi Huang.
“I cannot promise that I am going to win but I promise to give my best shot,” said Gonzales, who fought in a thrilling five setter match that lasted for four hours against top gun Lu Yen-hsun in the recent tie against Taiwan.
Besides Gonzales and Alcantara, the other members of the team are Treat Huey and Jeson Patrombon, who are both teaming up for the doubles event.
The duo of Huey and Patrombon will face Jui-chen Hung and Chieg-fu Wang on Saturday at 3 p.m.
On Sunday, Alcantara will face Ti Chen at 1 p.m. followed by Gonzales and Huang in the reverse singles.
Revenge will be at the forefront motivation of the Filipino Cuppers who suffered three consecutive defeats at the hands of the Taiwanese team.
World No. 24 Huey assured Filipino tennis fans of “some great tennis this weekend,” but said that the Taiwanese squad is still a favorite in the competition.
“They are a little bit of a favorite going to the match and we hope to make an upset this weekend,” said Huey.
