ITF Futures France 13 doubles champion Ruben Gonzales lost to Taiwanese Ti Chen, 2-6, 6-2, 2-6, 2-6, at the start of Philippines’ campaign in the Davis Cup Asia/ Oceania Group 2 semifinals tie on Friday at the Philippine Columbian Association clay-courts in Paco, Manila.
The match lasted for two hours and twenty-five minutes.
“I felt like he is playing a slowball and I couldn’t, for various reasons, capitalize. The opportunity and chances are there but he played good. The credit also goes to him,” said the 30-year old Gonzales.
Coach Karl Sta. Maria attributed his ward’s loss to inconsistencies in his execution of their game plan.
“In third set, I kept telling Ruben you have to win the few points of every game or even the first point because it changes the whole scheme of things,” said Sta. Maria.
“We had a game plan. We couldn’t match him from the baseline so we really need to take chances. We have to scheme a little bit because of his shot-for-shot and talking about experience wise, he is more advantaged.,” added Sta. Maria.
Gonzales posted 84 points including nine aces while Chen had 106 points and two aces.
Francis Casey Alcantara, meanwhile, is playing against Liang-Chi Huang as of press time.
Besides Gonzales and Alcantara, Treat Huey and Jeson Patrombon will also compete in the doubles event.
The duo of Huey and Patrombon will battle the tandem of Jui-chen Hung and Chieg-fu Wang today at 3 p.m. at the same venue.
On Sunday, Alcantara will face Ti Chen at 1 p.m. followed by Gonzales’ match against Huang.
