Former senator Francisco “Kit” Tatad and Act Teachers party-list Rep. Antonio Tinio on Saturday said there is no basis for the proposal of Sen. Richard “Dick” Gordon to empower President Rodrigo Duterte to suspend the writ of habeas corpus.
“It has no basis and we don’t know where that came from,” Tinio said in a news conference in Quezon City.
“Unfortunately, parang ginagamit nila itong war on drugs para i-justify ang kung anu-anong kaugnay doon sa proposal, to postpone the barangay elections, ngayon ang justification nila is war on drugs,” Tinio added. (They’re using the war on drugs to justify so many proposals – to postpone barangay elections and now this).
Tinio said the public must be vigilant to ensure that the people’s civil rights are protected.
“It is very clear warrantless arrests are not allowed. I can’t understand why this remains an issue), he added.
“Ang kaibigan nating si Dick, mukhang nagmintis. Kung may invasion o rebellion, kapangyarihan ng pangulo ‘yun. Hindi kailangang udyukan si Digong dito. Walang basis,” Tatad said. (Our friend Dick, I think he missed the point. If there was an invasion or rebellion, that is the president’s power, there is no need to prod Duterte. There is no basis.)
Senator Leila de Lima, Kabayan party-list Harry Roque, and Bayan Secretary General Renato Reyes Jr. had similarly voiced their opposition to Gordon’s proposal, saying that it is unconstitutional and could lead to more human rights violations.
