THE national government’s outstanding debt rose in September, the Bureau of the Treasury (BTr) reported on Friday, with both domestic and foreign obligations increasing.
Preliminary Treasury data placed government debt at P5.94 trillion last month, up by 3.7 percent or P212 billion. From August, government debt rose by 0.6 percent or P38 billion.
The local component of total debt stood at P3.88 trillion, up 3.4 percent from a year earlier. Measured against August, domestic debt increased by 0.7 percent or P27 billion.
Foreign debt, meanwhile, increased by 4.5 percent year-on-year and 0.5 percent month-on-month to P2.05 trillion.
The country’s foreign borrowings in September were priced at an exchange rate of P46.95 to a dollar.
Debt guaranteed by the national government fell by 2.44 percent to P445 billion in September from P456 billion a year earlier. Guaranteed debt on a month-on-month comparison increased by 7.8 percent from P412 billion in August.
