BANGKOK (Bangkok Post): The government’s Command Center for Combating Illegal Fishing (CCCI) plans to spend 215 million baht to buy fishing boats from owners and retire them to better protect the marine environment. The CCCI, headed by navy chief Admiral Na Areenij, resolved on Wednesday that the center, together with the Agriculture and Cooperatives Ministry and Department of Marine and Coastal Resources, would spend public funds to comply with a cabinet resolution issued Tuesday. The resolution aims to help fishing operators adversely affected by the government’s push to reduce the number fishing boats. The CCCI will form a working group to carry out the purchases. The acquired vessels would be sunk intentionally to create artificial coral reefs.
