COTABATO CITY: Government forces repelled “simultaneous attacks” by the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) in two towns in Maguindanao on Wednesday evening, a spokesman for the military said Thursday.
Capt. Arvin Encinas of the Army’s 6th Infantry Division described the incidents at 9 p.m. as an “encoun-ter” because “the troops were able to fire first before the attackers”, contradicting a claim by the BIFF that the troops were ambushed.
The Islamic State (IS) supporters at a Telegram channel on Thursday morning claimed responsibility for the attack.
“Soldiers of the Cross were ambushed by the fighters of the Islamic State in Sharif Aguak and Datu Salibo, Maguindanao around 9PM yesterday [Wednesday] evening,” the militants said through the Amaq News Agency.
Encinas said information from the local communities about the “planned” attacks alerted the military in the area.
“We already received information from local communities that the BIFF was planning simultaneous attacks… We were able to repel it,” Encinas said.
No one was hurt in the 10-minute clashes.
