A lawmaker has suggested developing the territories occupied by the Philippines in the Spratlys Islands in the West Philippine Sea.
Magdalo party-list Rep. Gary Alejano made the pitch after the government declared that the territorial dispute in the said waters has become the country’s biggest security concern.
“We have to develop all the islands that we have occupied so that we can show them, especially China, that we are not afraid of them and are ready to protect our territory,” he said.
Alejano, a former Marine captain, pointed out that China could possibly be thinking that the country is not interested.
“We might later find it difficult to develop our territory if China gains control of the whole West Philippine Sea,” he said.
Stressing the need to spend funds for such development, he said, “It is the country’s security that is at stake here.”
