THE much-touted tandem of Sen. Grace Poe and fellow senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero may be announced by mid-September which, according to believers of feng shui, is a lucky period for the two.
Informed sources said geomancy and other Chinese beliefs on “good luck” are playing an important role in the announcement of candidacies by some of those eyeing elective posts in next year’s polls, including the Poe-Escudero tandem.
“We may expect this to happen on September 16, between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. But, still, we cannot say this with finality because a lot of things may happen between now and their expected date of announcement, whenever that may be,” according to a source of The Manila Times.
The possible Poe-Escudero ticket emerged as the ruling Liberal Party (LP) begins to lose hope in trying to convince Poe, the frontrunner in presidential surveys, to slide down as Interior and Local Government Secretary Manuel “Mar” Roxas 2nd’s running mate.
Over the weekend, House Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr. echoed Senate President Franklin Drilon’s statement that the LP should finally drop Poe and instead find a running mate for Roxas.
“I myself agree with Senator Drilon that Senator Grace [in]the tandem with Senator Chiz
is already a go. There are many indications that they are already putting together a campaign,” Belmonte, LP vice chairman, said in a radio interview.
The House Speaker confirmed that fellow members in the LP are assessing the chances of giving up Poe for another preferred candidate, such as Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano, an official of the Nacionalista Party, to be Roxas’ running mate.
“Definitely I am very [open]to the notion that the vice presidential candidate need not be a Liberal. Outside of that, I want to give it to those, the candidates themselves, to pop some names to us,” Belmonte told dzBB.
Aside from Poe and Cayetano, the names of Camarines Sur Rep. Leni Robredo and Batangas Gov. Vilma Santos-Recto were floated as possible running mates of the Interior chief.
Drilon also mentioned the name of Sen. Antonio Trillanes 4th as possible running mate of Roxas but the senator has become unpopular over his involvement in certain issues.
Drilon, also vice chairman of the Liberal Party, has also said he is sure Poe will run for President in 2016.
“In my view, Sen. Grace Poe is already a candidate for President. The writings are on the wall. She will run. So we prepare and complete our slate for 2016, including the senators,” he added.
