Green rice to combat El Niño

LAOAG CITY, Ilocos Norte: To help mitigate the effects of the El Niño phenomenon, the Provincial Government here distributed a rice variety called “green super rice” (GSR) seeds to farmers which can grow with much less farm inputs and water. The Philippine Rice (PhilRice) has characterized the GSR rice specie which is being piloted for production in the province as drought tolerant which is still undergoing study assessment. Fidela Bongat, PhilRice director in Batac City, said the GSR seeds are still for recommendation for a rice variety but the provincial government distributed it as part of its farming program strategies to mitigate the effects of the dry spell hitting the province.
