Group criticizes VACC for having double standard

THE head of the Coalition of Filipino Consumers (CFC) on Sunday criticized the Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption (VACC) for abandoning him in the fight against corruption, particularly the alleged involvement of a family member of Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte.

Perfecto Jaime Tagalog, head of the CFC, claimed that the VACC, chaired by Dante Jimenez, abandoned him on the issue on Davao Vice Mayor Paolo “Pulong” Duterte, son of presidential bet Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, who is supposedly linked to smuggling in Davao.

The CFC was the one who exposed and filed charges of plunder, graft and indirect bribery against former Philippine National Police chief Alan Purisima that led to the latter’s suspension and eventual dismissal.

According to Tagalog, it was Jimenez who called him and offered to help when he exposed Purisima.

He lamented that when he started exposing the supposed links of Duterte’s son to smuggling, he was criticized by Jimenez, instead of getting support from the VACC.

The VACC, for its part, denounced Tagalog for his deceit and misrepresentation for identifying himself as a member of the VACC.

Arsenio Evangelista, spokesperson of the VACC, said that Tagalog has never been an active member of the organization, and that necessary complaint is being prepared against the CFC head for misrepresentation.

Tagalog urged the VACC to come out and support him in his bid to stop the smuggling activities of the Dutertes in Davao.

Tagalog, a former Duterte supporter, said it is the right time for the VACC to help voters choose their candidates by exposing anomalies of the Dutertes.

He claimed that smuggling of rice, electronic products, luxury vehicles, canned goods and ukay-ukay (second-hand goods) is rampant in Davao because of the Duterte family, particularly the son of the Mayor.

Citing reports by the Presidential Anti-Smuggling Group and the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) during the time of then President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, Tagalog said Pulong’s partner in smuggling is Glen Escandor, son of a certain Col. Escandor who owns the Mandaya Hotel and a big security agency.

He added that Lito Banayo, Mayor Duterte’s chief political strategist, was charged by the NBI of rice smuggling during his stint as NFA administrator. Tagalog said Banayo left the NFA and hid in Davao City under the protection of Mayor Duterte.
