Kevin Ferrer scored big in the final quarter to power University of Santo Tomas to a 68-58 come-from-behind win over Ateneo De Manila University in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 78 men’s basketball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

Ferrer scored 11 of his 27 points in the last quarter in addition to nine rebounds to let the Growling Tigers claim their fourth victory in five games.

UST and Far Eastern University, both bearing similar 4-1 win-loss records, are now sharing the top spot.

Cameroonian Karim Abdul scored five of his seven crucial points in the last two-minute plus 11 rebounds.

“It was a great win for us. The players played with a lot of heart tonight,” said UST coach Bong Dela Cruz. “Kevin [Ferrer] showed his leadership despite his sickness.”

Von Pessumal scored 19 points and Kiefer Ravena 13 points for the Blue Eagles.

Ateneo’s win-loss record dropped to 3-2.

In the first game, defending champion National University (NU) Bulldogs bagged their third consecutive victory by beating the University of the Philippines (UP) Fighting Maroons 68-52. Their win-loss record improved to 3-3.

Guard Gelo Alolino scored 13 of his 16 points in the second period. He registered four of his eight attempts in the three-point zone.

The 6’8 Cameroonian Alfred Aroga scored 12 points via 3-of-6 shooting in the field with 22 rebounds and two assists for NU.

“It is good to have three straight victories especially if you are coming from a 0-3 start,” said NU coach Eric Altamirano. “It is still a long way to go though. We really need to sustain our performance. We’re just starting to get our bearings.”

Jose Manuel and Andres Desiderio posted 16 and 10 points, respectively, to lead the Fighting Maroons.

UP suffered its third straight defeat after winning its first two games against University of the East and De La Salle University. The Fighting Maroons’ win-loss record dropped to 2-3.
