After six events, reigning overall titlist University of Santo Tomas is leading the general championship race in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 80.
The Growling Tigers has so far garnered 142 points highlighted by four championship crowns, three runners-up and two third-place finishes.
UST dominated the men and women’s judo, women’s beach volleyball and poomsae events then placed second in men’s beach volleyball, and men and women’s table tennis, and third in men’s tae kwon do and women’s swimming.
University of the Philippines is in second with 123 points while former champion De La Salle University occupies the third spot with 118 points.
The four runner-up trophies – in men and women’s badminton, women’s swimming and men’s taekwondo – and five bronzes – in women’s beach volleyball, men’s swimming, men’s table tennis, women’s tae kwon do and women’s judo – are good enough to keep the Fighting Maroons in the running.
La Salle topped the women’s table tennis and women’s badminton, wound up second in women’s swimming and poomsae, and got a bronze in the men’s judo.
Ateneo de Manila University grabs the fourth position with 109 points build from its titles in men and women’s swimming, and men’s judo, silver in women’s tae kwon do, and bronzes in men and women’s badminton.
National University has already bagged five crowns from men’s beach volleyball, men’s table tennis, men’s badminton, and men and women’s tae kwon do but stayed at fifth with 102 points.
University of the East takes the sixth place with 60 points followed by Far Eastern University (52) and Adamson University (26).
The UAAP awards 15 points to the champion, 12 to the runner-up, 10 to the third placer, eight to fourth, six to fifth, four to sixth, two to seventh and one to eighth.
The remaining event in the first semester is the ongoing seniors basketball (men and women) while the second semester events are football, volleyball, tennis, fencing, chess, track and field, baseball and softball.
