The University of Santo Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers defeated the Lyceum of the Philippines University (LPU) Pirates, 72-66, for their third win in the FilOil pre-season collegiate basketball tournament at the San Juan Arena on Wednesday.
Despite being outscored in the second quarter, the side of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines led the scoring tally at the half, 38-33.
The hapless Pirates fought hard in the paint but their offense proved to be too weak for the Growling Tigers as they failed to turn the game around in the final two quarters.
Ed Daquioag and Kent Lao spearheaded the charge of their team, with 16 and 15 points, respectively. The Tigers snatched their third win.
LPU’s Guy Mbida tallied 21 points and seven rebounds in the Pirates’ failed effort to take home a win.
In the other match, Cebu-based ball club Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras toppled the University of the Philippines (UP) fighting Maroons, 73-60, for their first win in the pre-season tilt.
The tight defense of the Cobras was punctuated by the impressive performance of its foreign rookie cager Boko Mupungo, who hails from Congo. Mupungo’s dominance inside the shaded lane was too much for UP as he posted 22 points and 18 rebounds.
UP stars Cris Vito, Paul Desiderio, Diego Dario and Jarell Lim tallied double-digit figures but their efforts to make their team win fell short.
