Feisty coach Yeng Guiao is leaving the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters to coach the Northern Luzon Expressway (NLEX) Road Warriors in the upcoming Philippine Basketball Association Season 42 in November according to a reliable source.
The source that requested anonymity told The Manila Times on Wednesday that Guiao did not renew his contract with Rain or Shine. He will be replacing Boyet Fernandez as NLEX coach.
“Yes, he’s the new NLEX coach but he wants to stay silent for the meantime. Coach (Guiao) wants an official of NLEX to announce it to the media. At the same time, Guiao also wants to deny certain reports that he is also negotiating with the Star Hotshots,” said the source.
The Times tried to contact NLEX for comment but received no reply at press time.
Guiao led the Elasto Painters to two titles—the Governor’s and Commissioner’s Cup plus six finals appearance and nine semifinals stints during his six years with the team.
In the absence of Guiao, Caloy Garcia will be Rain or Shine’s acting coach. Prior to coach Guiao’s appointment as Rain or Shine head coach in 2000, Garcia was the team’s head coach.
“It saddened me a lot because we learned a lot from him during the time we’re rebuilding,” Garcia told The Times in a phone interview. “He helped us a lot to win two championships. I will do what the management will ask. So far, I haven’t talked with the management yet but I’ll be the team’s acting coach for the meantime.”
NLEX will be the fourth team that Guiao would mentor after coaching Red Bull, AIR21 and Rain or Shine.
