Gingoog City, Misamis Oriental: The wife and daughter of former vice president Teofisto Guingona Jr. are running for the mayoralty and vice mayoralty posts here.
Guingona’s daughter, Marie, is seeking re-election while his wife Ruth is running as her vice mayor under the administration’s Liberal Party (LP).
In 2013, Ruth survived an ambush, allegedly by the New People’s Army (NPA), while campaigning for her daughter’s first try as mayoralty candidate. Ruth was a three-term mayor here.
However, a controversy cropped up on Friday after LP provincial head, 1st District Rep. Peter Unabia, endorsed Vice Mayor Eric Caniosa who is running under the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) against the young Guingona.
Caniosa’s vice mayoralty tandem, Misamis Oriental Board Member Abeng Bernaldez, is also backed by re-electionist Gov. Yevgeny Vicente “Bambi” Emano.
Former VP Guingona was the political rival of former governor Vicente “Dongkoy” Emano in the ‘90s.
Political observers said it appears that the rivalry of the Guingona and Emano clans has emerged anew.
