• Gun ban starts Jan 22 until March 2 for SK elections


    ILOILO CITY: The Commission on Elections (Comelec) and the Philippine National Police will implement a gun ban from January 22 to March 2, 2015, in time for the Sang-guniang Kabataan (SK) campaign and election period.

    Dennis Ausan, Comelec regional director for West Visa-yas, said the campaign period for those wanting to be elected SK officials is on February 11-19 while the filing of the Certificates of Candidacy will be on February 7, 9 and 10. The election is scheduled on Feb. 21. Ausan said the West Visayas Police will suspend the issuance of firearm licenses and strengthen its operations against illegal firearms.

    He also said that only regular members of the National Police, Armed Forces and other law enforcement agencies authorized by the Comelec will be allowed to carry weapons in public places. According to Ausan, there are 236,233 in Region 6 broken down to 81,617 in Negros Occidental, 74,483 in Iloilo, 32,060 in Capiz, 22,003 in Antique, 20,536 in Aklan and 5,534 in Guimaras.
