The leader of a notorious organized crime group operating in Batangas and nearby province of Laguna was nabbed by combined forces of the Batangas Provincial Intelligence Branch and Batangas SWAT (Special Weapons And Tactics) in a police operation on Thursday.
Batangas police director Sr. Supt. Omega Jireh Fidel identified the gangster as Renato Gregorio Jr. a.k.a. Junior, 24, of Barangay Malaking Pulo, Tanauan City, Batangas.
Gregorio, a known leader of the Gregorio robbery-hold-up and gun-for-hire group and drug pusher, was arrested in a police operation—service of warrant of arrest—at Maligaya Compound, Barangay 7, Tanauan City.
The warrant of arrest issued by Judge Louis Acosta of the Calamba Regional Trial Court branch 36 is in connection with the murder of Police Officer 2 (PO2) Rufino Mendoza, then assigned at Calamba City Police station, on February 16.
Fidel said Gregorio is a known killer of policemen who are involved in operations against persons using illegal drugs.
“Gregorio is also facing other murder charges and frustrated murder cases filed by Tanauan Police Station being one of the four accused in the shooting incident on April 16, 2013 that resulted in the death of SPO4 Wilfred Luna, a PNP member assigned in the Anti-Illegal Drugs Special Operation Task Force of Tanauan City and wounded a certain Lauro Macayanan,” Fidel said.
After Gregorio’s arrest, Batangas Police Intelligence Chief Police Supt. Christopher Birung said they received threats zeroed in on police operatives involved in the campaign against illegal drugs.
“This group is reported in the national directorate for intelligence. They have been operating for the last six to eight years and we performed surveillance for two months before the arrest. They have expanded their operations to Las Piñas and Bulacan,” Birung said.
The operation also resulted in the arrest of Gregorio’s companions Luis Magpantay and Ferdinand Ramos who were caught sniffing shabu at the same compound.
