ZAMBOANGA CITY: Soldiers killed two gunmen who attacked a military checkpoint on Friday in the province of Lanao del Sur, officials said.
Officials said one soldier was also killed in the attack, which occurred in the village of Dilausan in Madalum town. At least five gunmen in a small jeep strafed the checkpoint, triggering a gunbattle.
“We are still investigating the motive of the attack and the identities of those killed by soldiers,” Captain Jefferson Somera, a spokesman for the First Infantry Division, said, adding the bodies of the two gunmen remain unclaimed.
Somera said three other gunmen managed to escape and leaving the bodies of their companions. He said troops and policemen were tracking down the assailants.
Soldiers manning the checkpoint had recently seized illegal firearms in the village and it was unknown whether the attack was connected to the confiscation of the weapons.
