KIDAPAWAN CITY: An election officer was shot to death on Monday by unidentified gunmen while he was heading to Matalam town of North Cotabato, authority said.
Senior Inspector Elias Coloma, chief of Matalam police, identified the victim as Ted Monteverde Cespon, 56. Cespon was gunned down in Barangay Manubuan in Matalam, North Cotabato.
Investigators said unidentified gunmen riding motorcycles chased the public transportation multi-cab, where the victim is on-board, pointed a gun to the driver and ordered him to pullover.
Cespon had no idea that he was the target of the killing, according to the witnesses.
“The suspects immediately approached him and shot him with their handguns,” he added.
Investigators said the killers hurriedly left the crime scene after they killed Cespon with their caliber .45 pistols.
Cespon, a resident and assistant election officer of Parang town of Maguindanao, has been receiving “death threats” through his mobile phone from unknown senders prior to the incident.
Coloma said that they will ask Cespon’s relatives in Parang about the real motive of the killing and possibly to get identities of the suspects.
“There are indications that it could possibly be work-related. We’re not making conclusions this early. We have to let investigators finish their job of unearthing the real circumstances that led to the murder of Mr. Cespon,” Coloma said. MOH I. SAADUDDIN
