• Gurria cruises into PCA Open 2nd round

    Unheralded Stefano Gurria stunned eighth seed Jibril Ross Perpatua, 6-2, 7-5, to advance to the second round of the boys’ 12-under in the 33rd Philippine Columbian Association (PCA) Open presented by Cebuana Lhuillier and Metro Global Holdings on Saturday at the PCA indoor shell clay courts in Paco, Manila.

    Gurria will be meeting Lawrence Quitara, who scored an easy 6-0, 6-0 win over Patrick Robin Pellos.

    Second seed Aljon Talatayod, on the other hand, made his presence felt by crushing Jonel dela Pena 6-1, 6-1 to arrange a second-round meeting with Elvin Joseph Geluz, a 6-0, 6-0 winner over John Alexander Bayot.

    Alfred Doloroso, Sherwin Villacorte, Jose Rafael Cruz, Enrique Jugo and Czech Daruin Bacungan also reached the second round of the tournament supported by Cebuana Pera Padala, Micro Insurance, Phiten, Just Jewels, Cebuana Micro Insurance, Hon. Emmanuel “Manny” Pacquiao, Dunlop, Fujidenzo/Whirlpool, Babolat, Head, Accel, Malate Bayview Mansion, Coca-Cola Bottlers Phils. Inc., Philippine Prudential Life Insurance Company Inc., Seno Hardware and Standard Insurance.

    Doloroso beat Quazvin Ziggy Aben, 6-1, 6-2; Villacorte ousted Philippie Coteron, 6-2, 6-3; Cruz nipped Royce Lawrence Ramirez, 6-2, 6-2; and Jugo and Bacungan, who both scored a walk-over win over Marcus Macalalag and Mico Castillo, respectively.

    In the 10-unisex event, John Michael Belo blasted Fahad Malic, 4-0, 4-0; James Rohan Cruz clobbered Angelo James Rosales, 4-2, 4-1; Brent Nathon So whipped Michael Angelo German, 4-1, 4-0; Marcus Andrei Guinoo blanked Ken Edward Romen, 4-0, 4-0, Jarabet Catahan thumped Ethan Aldrin Geluz, 4-2, 1-4, 4-0; Joaquin De Leon trounced April Chrislie Bautista, 4-0, 4-0; and Marielle Alexi Jarata overpowered Carl Santos, 4-0, 4-2.

    “We’re very happy with the turnout. We see many new faces especially in the juniors’ division, which is always good para ma-train sila agad, they’re able to feel the pressure of intense tournaments,” PCA chairman Raul Diaz said.

    Action in the seniors division starts November 15 in the event supported by United Auctioneers Inc. Foton, Philippine Sports Commission, TLH Sports & Wellness Center/Solinco, Avida Land Corporation, Stronghold Insurance, Ryobi MHI and GMA 7.
