Danny Gutierrez and Gil Domingo pulled off a pair of squeakers in their respective divisions to share top honors in the Manila Southwoods Seniors Trimester Birthday Bash and Christmas tournament at Southwoods’ Masters course in Carmona, Cavite recently.
Gutierrez, a 10 handicapper, carded a gross 76 for a net 66 worth 42 points under the Stableford scoring system then nipped Mentz Deguito in the countback to snare the Class A crown in the 18-hole tournament backed by year-round sponsor San Miguel Purefoods and organized Manila Southwoods Seniors headed by president Paco Gonzalez.
Deguito, who also toted a 10 handicap, matched Gutierrez’s net 66 worth 42 points but the latter won the tiebreak by one with 13 points in the last six holes.
Domingo, on the other hand, shot a gross 84 for a net 68 worth 40 points, the same output put in by Ben Alfonso. But the former took the Class B crown with 21 tiebreak points in the last nine holes with the latter scoring 19.
Fred Javellana, a 26-handicapper, captured the Class C plum in the event backed by hole-in-one sponsor BMG Solar with a gross 98 worth 36 points, edging Gus Salgado, who scored 35 points from a gross 102 and net 75.
Sharing the spotlight were fun hole winners, including (nearest the pin) Bobby Cafe (No. 3 10.5 ft), Mert Marcelo (No. 5-6.5 ft), Willy Princesa (No. 13-11 ft) and Deguito (No. 17-16 ft); (longest drive) Danny Samaniego (No. 1-288 yards); and (most accurate drive) Rafael Seguis (No. 10-on the line).
