The Hapee Fresh Fighters clinched Game One of the PBA D-League Foundation Cup finals after beating the Cafe France Bakers, 83-72, at the Ynares Sports Arena, Pasig on Thursday.
Hapee took control of the game with a slim lead, 23-22, after the first period of action.
The tight defense of the Bakers slowed down the Fresh Fighters’ charge but the latter still had a 38-37 advantage going into the break.
Cafe France was unable to topple Hapee in the final stretch of their meeting despite a stellar performance of the duo of Samboy De Leon and Michael Miranda from beyond the arc.
Chris Newsome led the Fresh Fighters with 18 points, seven rebounds and five assists while Troy Rosario and Baser Amer, fresh from their stint with the Gilas Cadets, added 11 markers each.
The Fresh Fighters were the more efficient troop in the bout with a 53 percent field goal percentage against the Bakers’ 35 percent.
Despite an impressive rebounding of Rodrigue Ebondo, who notched 12 rebounds, Cafe France were still dominated by Hapee in the battle inside the paint with a total of 44 boards.
