Haribon’s Darwin Initiative Project

Haribon’s Darwin Initiative Project 19-020, in partnership with Newcastle University (UK) held at Lanuza Bay, Surigao del Sur, shows that some fish species at the bay are nearly extinct, including the Humphead Wrasse (cheilinus undulatus) or locally known as Mameng. The team will also do underwater fish surveys to check its population.

Humphead Wrasse is listed as endangered by IUCN 2004 and included in the CITES 2004, subjecting the fish specie to strict regulations to avoid its utilization incompatible with their survival.

The Project covers Palawan, Verde Island Passage, Polilio Island and Bohol, aimed to reconcile conservation with sustainable livelihood in the sites. It also works toward appropriate policy recommendations at various scales.
