Former Supreme Court Chief Justice Renato Corona and former Gov. Luis “Chavit” Singson of Ilocos Sur are now prevented from leaving the country after hold departure orders (HDOs) against them were issued by the Sandiganbayan.
On Friday, Bureau of Immigration (BI) Commissioner Siegfred Mison ordered immigration officers nationwide to immediately implement the HDOs on Corona and Singson by the anti-graft court.
“Pursuant to separate orders, both dated 15 April 2014, of the Sandiganbayan, Third Division, QC, the Bureau of Immigration included Luis Crisologo Singson and Renato Corona y Coronado in the Hold Departure List. All on duty officers and supervisors in all international airports are directed to implement said order and prevent the subjects from leaving the country,” the BI said in a text message.
The anti-graft court said the order was issued “to preserve and maintain the effectiveness of its jurisdiction over the cases and the persons of the accused at all times amenable to its writs and processes.”
People coddling either of the two accused may face criminal charges, Mison warned.
But he assured all concerned that the suspects’ legal rights will be respected.
Meanwhile, the BI emphasized that the subject of a warrant of arrest shall be turned over to the Philippine National Police or the National Bureau of Investigation, and that the passport of the subject of a pending deportation case shall be confiscated and turned over to the legal division.
