ILOILO CITY: The Department of Health (DOH) has chosen this city and eight municipalities in the second district of Iloilo as pilot areas of three important programs which were launched in this city on June 18.
The programs to be implemented with the collaboration of local government units (LGUs) are prevention of blindness, promotion of health and wellness for persons with disabilities and prevention of violence and injury.
DOH Program Manager Dr. Prescilla Cuevas said the programs will greatly improve the health and wellness of marginalized people such as the blind and disabled under a culture of safety and help them become more independent.
Aside from Iloilo City, the other LGUs covered are the municipalities of Pavia, Sta. Barbara, New Lucena, Zarraga, Leganes, San Miguel, Alimodian and Leon.
Cuevas said the prevalence of blindness, cataract and sight infraction has affected more than 4 percent of the population. Cataract is expected to reach more than 8 percent while visual impairment will affect more than 10 percent by the year 2016.
Injuries, on the other hand, ranked third in the country. These include vehicular injuries, falls, sports injuries, animal bites, stings and suicides.
Cuevas also challenged LGUs to enact local ordinances and measures to help people become useful despite their injuries.
