ILOILO CITY: Health Secretary Janette Garin said 276 new barangay health stations (BHS) will be built in Western Visayas to expand the universal health care services of the Department of Health. The new BHS buildings will cost P384,398,050.56 which likewise serve as school clinics. A total of 3,200 units will be constructed nationwide at P1,392,746.56 per unit. In Western Visayas, the new BHS are 14 in the province of Aklan, 31 in Antique, 45 in Capiz, 25 in Guimaras, 147 in the province of Iloilo, and 14 in Iloilo City. Garin said there are only 17,904 BHS for the 42,029 barangays all over the country. Only 42 percent of the total barangays are served by a BHS. Similarly, the Department of Education established 38,688 public elementary schools all over the country which means 92 percent of all barangays have public schools.
