JOSE Rizal University (JRU) employed solid defense to hold off Emilio Aguinaldo College, 81-79, for its fifth victory in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Season 90 seniors basketball tilt at The Arena in San Juan City. The Heavy Bombers now have a 5-3 win-loss record.
Philip Paniamogan and Jaycee Asuncion finished with 18 points and 15 points, respectively, while Tey Teodoro scattered 14 points including crucial shots in the third period to foil the Generals’ attempted comeback.
“We’re starting to develop our composure,” said JRU coach Vergel Meneses, who won a third straight close game after beating Perpetual Help System DALTA, 62-61 and Arellano University, 99-98, in triple overtime. “What we need to develop now is the killer’s instinct.”
The Heavy Bombers unleashed a 15-0 blitz capped by the triples of Teodoro and Asuncion to turn a 48-51 deficit to a 66-53 advantage in the last quarter. Although the Generals managed to close the gap at 76-75 with 1:40 left.
Michael Mabulac and Teodoro made free throws as JRU seized the lead back, 79-76, with 36.6 seconds remaining.
The Generals came close at 79-81, but John Toyontong’s three-point shot sealed their victory as the buzzer sounded.
The Generals’ win-loss record fell to 2-6.
