PHILIP Criszam Paniamogan scored 12 points in the pivotal period as host Jose Rizal University (JRU) Heavy Bombers crushed Letran Knights, 69-60, on Monday in the 90th National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) basketball tournament at the San Juan Arena.
The two-year veteran Paniamogan’s two triples in the fourth quarter bailed out the Bombers from trouble to secure their second win in four matches. Paniamogan of Cagayan de Oro City likewise scored all of the team’s final eight points to move coach Vergel Meneses’ squad to solo fifth spot. Last year’s runner-up Letran dropped to the No.8 position with 1-3 win-loss record.
Letran put up a tough resistance that also saw coach Caloy Garcia being ejected after committing two technical fouls in the crucial stretch.
Coach Vergel Meneses of JRU hopes the victory would bolster the confidence of his players.
The Heavy Bombers and the Knights started slow scoring only 5-4, in the first six minutes of the game before locking the match at 14-14 in the first period. A back-to-back jumper by Kevin Racal and Mark Cruz added two points to move the Knights to 48-45, going into the final frame.
Paniamogan finished with 22 points for the Heavy Bombers while Jaycee Asuncion added 10 points with five rebounds and five assists. Kevin Racal lead the Knights with 17 points.
