GIO Lasquety’s pair of free throws in the final 1.2 seconds lifted the Jose Rizal University (JRU) Heavy Bombers to a 114-112 double overtime win over the Arellano University Chiefs in the 91st National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City on Thursday.
However, Arellano University protested over a basket by JRU’s Tey Teodoro, whose jumper was wrongly given a three-pointer.
“The game is under protest, we already signed the scorebook,” said Peter Cayco, Arellano’s representative to the to NCAA’s management. After review of the tape, the referees saw that Teodoro’s jumper was just a two-pointer.
Lasquety finished with only eight points but his shots from the charity lane off a foul by Jiovani Jalalon is all that the Heavy Bombers need to escape with the victory. The Heavy Bombers earlier beat the Chiefs 78-61, during the opening day on June 27.
The Heavy Bombers are now sharing the fourth spot with the Arellano Chiefs that are also carrying a 6-4 win-loss record.
But it was John Pontejos who actually led the team with 32 points, four rebounds, eight assists and two steals. The Mandaluyong-based Bombers last won a collegiate basketball crown in 1972.
Cameroonian Abdoul Potouochi finished with 21 points and 17 rebounds while Teodoro scored 16 plus five assists. Jalalon led the Arellano Chiefs with 36 points, 16 assists and seven rebounds.
In the other game, the Mapua Institute of Technology Cardinals beat the University of Perpetual Help System DALTA Altas, 70-65, to remain a strong sixth with 5-5 record. The Altas are still occupying the third spot with a 7-3 card.
