ZAMBOANGA CITY: Heavy rains sank at least four villages in Zamboanga del Sur and triggered a landslide in Zamboanga City, police said on Sunday.
Police said the downpours triggered flash floods that affected the barangays of Magsaysay, Katipunan, Switch and Esperanza, all in Ramon Magsaysay town.
Police and civilian rescuers led by Insp. Jeremias Soreño evacuated the villagers to safer areas. There was no report of casualties, but police remain in the affected areas.
Flash floods also occurred in the barangays of Baliguian town, Zamboanga del Norte. Several houses were also damaged and police headed by Inspector Joie Alcasarin also assisted in the evacuation of residents.
A landslide was also reported in the village of Salaan in Zamboanga City, disrupting vehicular traffic in the area, prompting barangay officials to ask from the provincial government heavy equipment to remove the boulders and earth from the area. No casualty was reported from the landslide.
