CAMP DIEGO SILANG, La Union – Two men and a girl drowned while swimming under heavy rains along the river of Tubao and Aringay towns, police reported here on Tuesday.
Police Chief Inspector Artemio Infante, La Union police information officer, identified the fatalities as Christopher Colcol, 36, a resident of Victoria Village in Baguio City, Kijel Carpio, 19, a resident of Barangay Magsaysay, Tubao, La Union, and Florentina Frigillana, 22, of San Juan West, Aringay, La Union.
Infante said Colcol and Carpio were having a family picnic at about 12:00 noon, Sunday when they decided to swim at a deep portion of the Tubao river. The two were swept by strong water current and went missing for several days before their bodies were found by rescuers Tuesday morning.
Infante said the girl, along with a cousin, were swimming Friday afternoon along the Aringay river using a bamboo raft when she jumped from the raft and drowned.
Her body was retrieved by rescuers around 7:00 p.m. and was brought to a nearby hospital, but she was declared dead there.
It was learned that the strong current of the rivers of Tubao and Aringay was caused by continuous heavy downpour.
