ABOITIZPOWER’S wholly-owned subsidiary Hedcor, operator of the Bineng run-of-river hydropower plants in La Trinidad, Benguet is set to ramp up the capacity of the existing Bineng cascading plants.
Hedcor said it will increase the current capacity of Bineng 1, Bineng 2 and Bineng 2b from 5.48 megawatts to 19 MW.
The Bineng Combined Hydroelectric Power Project is expected to generate an additional 42.7 million kWh for a total generation of 62 million kWh annually.
Hedcor is currently processing its Free Prior Informed Consent with the National Commission on Indigenous People and various stakeholders.
AboitizPower, the power arm of Aboitiz Equity Ventures Inc. (AEV), said the project is expected to be online by 2018.
The Bineng hydropower plants were constructed in 1991. They harness the water of the Balili River, which flows northward from Baguio City to La Trinidad.
All the Bineng hydro plants hold International Organization for Standardization (ISO) certifications. These standards are Quality Management, Environmental Management, Information Security and Occupational Health and Safety.
“For 25 years of operation, Barangay Bineng and the Municipality of La Trinidad had been partners with Hedcor. From 2007-2009 Hedcor had been the highest taxpayer of the municipality. With the upcoming expansion, the existing shares, taxes and CSR [corporate social responsibility]projects to the barangay, municipal and the province are seen to increase,” Hedcor said.
