A TRANSPORT group wants P1 added to the minimum jeepney fare during the rush hours, an arrangement they likened to the “surge pricing” scheme granted to transport network companies Grab and Uber.
In a petition before the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board, the Kilusan sa Pagbabago ng Industriya ng Transportasyon (KAPIT) said the provisional fare hike is necessary to offset higher fuel consumption during peak hours.
“We are seeking the fare increase because of additional costs of operating vehicles during the rush hours, because traffic is heavier and fuel consumption is higher,” said lawyer Vigor Mendoza, KAPIT chairman, in an interview aired on GMA News.
The higher rate is meant to cover only brand-new passenger jeepneys and only during the rush hours.
KAPIT wants P8 as minimum fare from 5 a.m. to 8 a.m. and from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m., applicable to units that have been operating for less than a year.
Additionally, the group is proposing that UV Express or FX Van drivers and operators be allowed to collect an additional fare of between P10 to P15 in consideration of the ban for these types of passenger vehicles on Epifanio de los Santos Avenue or EDSA.
