THE plan of Councilor Victor Ferrer of Quezon City to raise business taxes in the city by 10 percent is being opposed by businessmen who find it unfeasible with slowdown in business because of competition from smuggled goods from China. Most affected by the Chinese products are manufacturers based in the city. This new round of increase is being tackled in a series of public hearings slated on November 26, 27 and 28. Ferrer, head of the Ways and Means committee, has proposed an ordinance raising business taxes by 10 percent beginning 2014. He is also proposing an ordinance increasing and imposing an annual garbage fee to include households and providing penalties for those who will not pay it.
