Her name should be familiar to film buffs who especially keep track of Hollywood’s award winning stars. She is Ivana Chubbuck, the renowned global acting coach, whom the likes of Halle Berry, Jared Leto, and Charlize Theron have thanked in their speeches as they clutched their Oscars trophies on the biggest night of their careers.
Chubbuck was in Manila for the second time over the weekend to conduct her two-day master acting class for select Star Magic artists of ABS-CBN.
Her first visit to the Philippines saw Piolo Pascual, Sam Milby, Jake Cuenca, and Dimples Romana, among other noted Filipino actors in her closed door workshop; while Jason Abalos, Jason Gainza, Coleen Garcia, Alora Sasam, JV Kapunan, Raphael Robes, Paulo Avelino, Mica Javier and Ritz Azul had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be taught by Brad Pitt and Beyonce’s beloved acting coach on September 3 and 4.
Granting an interview just before she took over the Dolphy Theater to impart her famed “Chubbuck Method,” The Manila Times asked what kind of a fulfillment does a teacher like her enjoy when she hears her name mentioned at the Academy Award’s rostrum.
“It’s like watching your child at a ballet recital,” the American gushed and giggled. “The parents will understand how I feel.”
Looking forward to working with Filipino artists anew—side by side with Star Magic Artist Training Head Rahyan Carlos who first invited Chubbuck over in 2014, and is the only authorized teacher of her method in the Philippines—the acting coach said she “deeply connected” with Pascual and his batch “and came out of the workshop a better person herself.”
Since undergoing the Chubbuck Method, Pascual had been nominated for a Famas Award (Best Actor, Famas Award, 2014); while Cuenca just won an international Award in May at the 2016 World Cinema Festival in Brazil for the indie film Mulat.
