Longest-running LIRA workshop opens applications
Linangan sa Imahen, Retorika at Anyo (LIRA), a national volunteer education group and the oldest organization of poets in Filipino, invites everyone interested in Filipino poetry to submit applications to the LIRA Poetry Workshop 2016 (Taunang Palihang Pampanulaan 2016).
LIRA’s intensive training program seeks to hone poets who are committed to excel in their craft and dedicated to the fostering of literature, language, culture, and national identity. This is in line with the organization’s thrust of “poet-volunteerism,” which merited its declaration in 2011 as one of the nation’s Ten Accomplished Youth Organizations.
Accepted fellows will go through a series of lectures and workshops that focus on the different aspects of poetry and literature in general, and are facilitated by renowned Filipino poets. The weekly workshops will run from June to November and will be held every Saturday and Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The sessions will be held in UP Diliman and satellite venues in Metro Manila.
Interested applicants must submit the following: Accomplished application form (in PDF or DOC) that confirms the applicant’s agreement to the terms of the workshop and contains their contact details; and five poems in Filipino (Poems in English or other languages will not be accepted).
Submissions must be emailed to email@example.com on or before May 1. The workshop fee is P1,500. This will be used for the readings and other workshop necessities of the accepted fellows.
The LIRA Poetry Workshop is the longest-running workshop focusing on Filipino poetry and celebrates its 31st anniversary this year. National Artist for Literature and LIRA Founder Virgilio Almario (a.k.a Rio Alma) heads the workshop and the panelists.
Among the celebrated poets (who are mostly products of the said workshop) dedicating their time to poetry are the following: Victor Emmanuel Carmelo Nadera, Romulo Baquiran Jr., Michael Coroza, Fidel Rillo, Marne Kilates, Roberto Añonuevo, Rebecca Añonuevo, DM Reyes, Edgar Calabia Samar, Enrique Villasis, Jerry Gracio, Nanoy Rafael, ErgoeTinio, Ina Abuan, Giancarlo Lauro Abrahan, and MJ Tumamac.
