Nonito “Dodong” Donaire Sr., the father and trainer of World Boxing Organization super bantamweight champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire Jr. said that the hot Cebu weather wouldn’t affect his son’s title defense against Hungarian Zsolt Bedak on Saturday at the Cebu City Sports Complex in Cebu.
“My son has already adjusted to the hot weather since two weeks ago and we have no any problem when it comes to the hot weather condition,” Donaire Sr. told The Manila Times on Monday in a phone interview.
Donaire holds a 36-3 win-loss record with 23 knockouts while the former Olympian Bedak has a 25-1 win-loss record with eight knockouts.
“We just finished a seven to 12 rounds of sparring there in Manila and felt the heat, but it did not affect his strength and speed. In his first day of sparring in Manila, he felt so exhausted but managed to adjust in the following days,” the older Donaire added.
Donaire Sr. said that it is Bedak 32, who may be affected by the extreme summer heat.
“Bedak lives in Hungary and the weather there is cold that’s why I’m sure he’ll easily get tired during the bout,” Donaire added. “The humidity here is different. Bedak just arrived last Saturday and I’m pretty sure the adjustment on his part won’t be so easy.”
“So far, Nonito’s condition looks very good. We trained yesterday in hotel, but no sparring. There was no any sign of giving up due to the hot weather. I guess our early preparation in Manila is the key here. I believe knockout victory will happen in our favor,” Donaire Sr. concluded.
