Another unprecedented event transpired on Wednesday after the House Suffrage and Electoral Reforms panel approved the anti-political dynasty bill.
This developed a day after Supreme Court declared the Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) or the congressional discretionary fund unconstitutional via a unanimous 14 to 0 vote.
The bill prohibits two or more individuals related within the second degree of consanguinity or affinity from holding or running for a national or local post in successive, simultaneous or overlapping terms.
“Originally, the ban extends to the kin of the incumbent official up to fourth consanguinity. But we decided to limit it to second degree because a fourth degree limit would already cover too many people,” Rep. Antonio Tinio of Alliance of Concerned Teachers party-list, one of the authors of the measure, pointed out during the hearing.
“I hope that the successful campaign on the abolition of the pork barrel will translate to a popular support for the Anti-Political Dynasty bill because pork barrel and political dynasties breed political patronage,” Tinio added.
