ORMOC CITY, Leyte: Politician couples here are colliding for the congressional and mayoralty posts. Rep. Lucy Torres-Gomez is seeking reelection against Violy Codilla, wife of Mayor Edward Codilla, who is being challenged by Lucy’s husband Richard Gomez. It Lucy’s first time to face Violy, while it will be a return bout between Richard and Edward. In 2013, Richard lost by one thousand votes. The Gomez couple, however, is optimistic that Richard will trounce Edward this time because the latter is involved in several controversies. Foremost of these is the Commission on Audit finding that millions of pesos of city funds were paid to a gasoline station allegedly owned by the mayor. Another is the on-and-off water service in this city. Residents complain that water from their faucets is no longer safe for drinking, forcing them to buy purified water that costs at least P20 per 5 gallons.
